Pressestimmen

"McCracken is a firecracker stylist and every sentence, every image, is crafted for physical impact… It is exuberant, a bit bonkers and raw and unflinching. It will find a great many fans – and no doubt some awards, too." (Lucy Atkins Sunday Times)"A big, glorious novel in every sense, this sprawling family saga… is a funny and big-hearted epic from a seriously gifted wordsmith." (Samantha Irby Marie Claire)"McCracken’s rambunctious saga [Bowlaway]… is a funhouse of a novel. Even the most incidental of characters are granted glorious vignettes… in [an] unpredictable and startling world." (Wendy Erskine Spectator)"[McCracken has] considerable gifts as a novelist [and] instinctive access to the most intricate threads of human thought and feeling... This novel’s cast grows epic, but McCracken is always most impressive when she works small, when she is describing movie kisses or corsets or simply loneliness and longing." (New York Times)"Death and life, frosted with macabre comedy: it’s why we’ve enjoyed Elizabeth McCracken since her debut novel, The Giant’s House… nothing is ordinary in this story… There’s a wickedness to McCracken’s technique, the way she lures us in with her witty voice and oddball characters but then kicks the wind out of us… endlessly surprising." (Ron Charles Washington Post)

I wish I had read a sample prior to buying this book. Some may find the prose eccentric in a funny or cute way but it doesn't appeal to me. I couldn't finish it. When a child recollect vividly her own birth, I quit.

The novel begins with a mystery: Who is the woman stretched out in the Salford Massachusets Cemetery and is she dead or alive? The youthful, gimpy cemetery custodian, Joe Wear, calls out for help when he comes upon the body and Dr. Leviticus Sprague, taking his morning constitutional through the cemetery, detects a pulse in the prone mystery woman. The men search her bag to try to learn about her. Who is she and where did she come from? The most important items in the bag are a small bowling ball, a candle pin and twelve pounds of gold in a false bottom. When her green eyes flutter open, Bertha Truitt tells the doctor, "Darling Sir, I was dreaming of love." Both the doctor and the reader cannot help but be entranced with her.Bertha is the "sun" around whom all the characters orbit in over an eighty year period. In her wake the reader experiences the founding of the Truitt Bowling Alley, WWI, the growth of the game of candlepin bowling in New England, the Molasses Flood of 1919, the Great Depression, WWII and the generations of New Englanders who own and recreate in the bowling alley.McCracken's characters are quirky. While some are fleshed out like Bertha, Dr. Sprague and Joe Wear, others like Minna Sprague and Nahum Truitt are underdeveloped and fuzzy. There are times when the author uses arcane vocablulary, usually of old French origin, such as eldrich, gallimaufry, louche and quenelle. They do not jive with either the New England setting or the characters. Still, this reviewer found the many connections among real time events, Bertha Truitt and the other characters humorous and interesting. Certainly, not all the mysteries are solved in the end.

To be honest, I gave up about about a third of the way through. It was so boring! It was trying to be witty but came out childish.

Bowlaway is a sprawling and ambitious novel based in a small New England town covering decades and multiple generations. It begins with the mysterious discovery of Bertha Truitt in the town cemetery. Where did she come from? No one knows, but everyone has a theory. 'I'm here now', is all she'll say when asked about here origins. Her Gladstone bag contains a bowling ball, bowling pin and several pounds of gold. From those contents she will build a bowling alley where a whole host of characters , and I mean characters, lives will intertwine. This is my first time reading Elizabeth McCracken, which is a pity because she's a fantastic writer. Shame on me for discovering her so late. This is a intricate confection of a novel chocked full of whimsy. So full that at times is leans towards being overwritten and stifling in its commitment to nailing down the detail and thoughts of the huge cast of characters. Enjoyment of this book will be determined by the reader's ability to identify with the characters. I did. In fact, I fell in love with several of them. Without out that connection the whimsy will wear thin on many readers - too cloying. I loved it, though. This novel is not just about love and bowling, but about identity. Most of the characters struggle with just who they, are and what their lives mean. Except, ironically, Bertha Truitt who sets so much of the action forward. It's as if she were the bowling ball and the rest of the characters are the pins strewn about in the wake of her ambition and ideals. 'What she wanted was a kind of greatness the women were not allowed. If they were allowed a small measure of it, they had to forsake love. She forsook nothing.'Speaking of identity, a large portion of the novel delves into many of the characters coping with motherhood. One young woman who lost her daughter to a freak accident and is then identified by her husband as 'defective' because birthing and raising children to him is the main reason for a wife's existence. In a heartbreaking passage she contemplates whether 'she might not be able to hold anyone's baby again' since the other women regard her as bad luck - 'a combustible gas, the baby a match; which one is dangerous makes no difference but best to keep them apart.' Another character, raised in an orphanage is hired to tend a baby girl whom she becomes infatuated with the rest of her life. An obsession that strains her relation with her own children. In another painful passage she is reunited with her former ward who has become a successful and independent. When asked about her own children she shrugs and confesses 'You're the one I love.' Her former ward is 'scandalized and knew that it was true. It was an old love, paid for, but paid in full.' Life for her has moved on, but for her former caretaker it hasn't and won't without a tremendous amount of resistance and denial. But there's a lot of humor to temper the heartrending passages. There were several times that I laughed out loud while reading this novel. I enjoyed this book a lot. I'm not entirely sure that the author stuck the landing, so to speak. Sometimes it feels like the novel gets mired at certain points from the sheer number of characters and multiple plot lines, but it never gets seriously stuck. Once again, Elizabeth McCracken is a great writer and she can tell a story. I look forward to reading her earlier works.

I am an avid reader and taught literature in college, but I could not finish reading this book. The dialogue and thoughts of the characters were almost impossible to follow. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't.
